A "Blast From The Past" - a  psychedelic ZIA -Zentangle Inspired Art! This reminds me of the colorful art created during the 60's and 70's.   I did this today for my Monday evening class - they seem to like the ZIA's.  This time we will do the composition first, then the Zentangle work and then finish  with the watercolor.  I am going to give them some pictures of flowers and landscapes found in some ZIA and then they will do their own compositions. Mine is loosely based on one I found on Pinterest, which I think was actually created with computer graphics, created entirely on the computer.  Mine is not.

This work is 12" x 9" and is done on 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.

I Am The Diva Challenge 193: Overflowing Abundance

This week's challenge is to use three tangles, Trio, Huggins and XYP.  I decided to use the Thanksgiving theme because I thought that Huggins would create a great basket weave for a cornocopia.  This, of course, is obviously a Zentangle Inspired Art, not a Zentangle.

I used grey paper (6" x 8" ) and Micron Pigma pens in .005 and.05.  I used white, peach and terra cotta Prismacolor colored pencils for shading.

The Diva's Challenge #190: Pink for Ardath

The Diva called this Challenge Pink for Ardath because last winter her grandmother Ardath passed away from complications due to Breast Cancer. So she has dedicated this challenge to all people who have valiantly fought this fight against Breast Cancer.  The challenge for the "Challenge" this week is to incorporate "Pink" somewhere in the tangle.

My tangle is 6" x 6" and is done on a piece of white illustration board.  I used the Prismacolor colored pencil  color "pink" and Micron -Pigma ink pens in .005 and .05.  I used the symbol Hearts for 2 reasons - first and most importantly,  everyone should fight this disease with all their hearts, and secondly, my maiden name is Hart and I often use Hearts in my compositions.

30 Paintings in 30 Days: Day 29: Zentangle Inspired Art Two

I created this zentangle inspired art with my watercolor class tonight at Riverside Art Center.  I did one of these with a leaf motif last week and decided that it would make a good lesson, so that is what we did this evening - I painted this as they worked along. Firt they drew the leaves in pencil and then did a wet-in-wet watercolor over the drawing in colors of fall.  Then they zentangled tangles over the leaves with the micron-pigma pens.   

They really enjoyed the project and we will photograph it next week after all are completed.  This painting is 12" x 9" and is on 140 lb. Canson cold-pressed watercolor paper.

30 Paintings in 30 Days: Day 19: Zentangle with Philcops and Diva Dance

I did this for the I Am the Diva Challenge #185 which is to create a dual design using Philcops and Diva Dance tangles.  This is my rendition of Philcops and Diva Dance.  I started out determined to make this zentangle in asymmetrical balance with the three philcops in the center, and still ended up with a symmetrical design after I added the area outside the circle.  For some reason (maybe the fact that I am a Libra) - everything has to be balanced in my life.  When I am painting in oils or watercolor I have no trouble doing them in asymmetrical balance, but as soon as I zentangle - the symmetrical genes kick in - guess I will just go with it!

This tangle is 6" square and is done on good white drawing paper with Micron-Pigma pens and Prismacolor colored pencils.

30 Paintings in 30 Days: Day 9: Zentangle Inspired Art using the tangle "Ing"

This project is also for the Diva's Challenge #184 - a Zentangle weekly challenge - I decided to kill 2 birds with one stone, so to speak!  The challenge is to use the new tangle "ing" in a zentangle design or zentangle inspired art.

I had some trouble with "Ing" and am still not certain if I did it correctly.

I did this tangle on a piece of printmaking paper that I had left over.  I did a wet-in-wet background in burnt sienna and yellow ochre using QoR watercolors from Golden and then did my tangle on top using an .03 Micron Pigma black drawing pen.

I Am The Diva Weekly Challenge #178: Duo-Tangle

The challenge this week is to create a duo-tangle using tangles that begin with the first letter of your first and last name.  Since my name is Barb Sailor,  I had to find patterns that began with B and S.  I chose Boomerang and Sparkle.  

I worked on a 5" x 5" square piece of good white drawing paper and did my design mostly in .005 Micron Pigma black pen and poppy red Prismacolor colored pencil.  I also did some shading with a black colored pencil.  I tried to get this design symmetrical, but failed - oh well!  I enjoyed doing it anyway...I have to get over being such a perfectionist!!! lol

The Diva's Challenge #174: Superimposing Strings

This is my contribution to this week's Diva Challenge: Superimposing Strings.  For those of you who do not Zentangle, a string is the linear pattern which you lay down first, in which your tangle patterns are drawn ( in the sections, or outside, etc., or, in my case, both.

I did this tangle on 5" x 5"  good white drawing paper.  It doesn't look white because my camera is getting crazy.  I used Sakura Micron-Pigma waterproof ink drawing pens and an HB pencil for shading in some areas.

I discovered that I am really way too intricate on this one - Oh well - live and learn!  As I said before, I am new to this tangling thing. :0

I Am The Diva's Weekly Challenge, #170: "Bugles"

This is the first time I have done a Zentangle for the I Am The Diva Weekly Challenge.  Each week, a tangle is selected as the subject of the weekly challenge.  This week it is "Bugles" by Joyce Evans.  The objective is to design a tangle composition using the challenge tangle.  I got a little carried away with this one - lots of linear work - I feel this could be simplified and be a lot better.  Well - at least I am getting my feet wet!

Village Five: The Tangled Forest

Well...every village needs a forest nearby and that is the case with the Tangled Village.  This piece of Zentangled Inspired Art is a mixed media creation of black construction paper, prismacolor colored pencils, illustration board,white drawing paper, and Micron-Pigma waterproof drawing pencils.

The trees were   tangled into designs with white prismacolor color pencil on black construction paper and then cut out.  The illustration board was shaded into sky and snow with colored pencils and the trees were then glued down on top.  The branches were drawn with the Micron-Pigma black drawing pen and the cardinals were drawn on printer paper with colored pencils and then cut out and glued onto the composition.

This piece is 12 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches in size. 

Village Two

This is the second tangle in the Village Series...it is also 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" in size and is on good white drawing paper.  It is also created with Micron-Pigma waterproof drawing pens.
