Two Flutes With Five Pears

This painting was created in watercolor for the May Project of the Watercolor Workshop yahoo group "all paint from one photo." The photo was provided by member Jane James.
This painting is 11" x 13" and is painted on 140 lb. Fabriano Artistico cold-pressed watercolor paper. I drew it free hand from the photograph and it was painted mostly wet-on-dry in a very controlled manner because I wanted it to be realistic and depict the reflections in the glass and the light on the fruit. I also wanted to show how shadows also have many colors in them - they are just not grey. This was a challenge, but was very rewarding to paint.

A beautiful piece as a whole, Barb? Why do I phrase it like that? Because I can't decide which is more beautiful, the flutes? the pears? the bowl? the shadows? I give up and call it one lovely painting.

I love the colors too. If it were me I'd consider cropping it a little so the setting is a little more off-center and something besides the shadow touches the edges. What do you think?

Absolutely scrumptious colors in these shadows. Love the composition, the choice of subject. Yeah!!!

Barb, you were certainly up to the challenges that you had set for yourself. The shadows are stunning!

This is just so perfectly rendered, Barb! I love the placement of that right hand pear now that allows a peak of the other flute base. When I first saw your version, I had already drawn and started my painting, in which I followed the photo's placement of that pear. Duh! Why didn't I think of that? I also like the delicacy of your reflections in the flutes.
