Corrie's Poppies

I finished this painting this afternoon. It was a painting I had my intermediate watercolor students do at Riverside Arts Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio. It was a challenge for the students but they did very well. I will post their results as soon as they finish and I get them photographed.
This painting is from a photograph by Corrie Scott who is a photographer and artist. She generously gave me permission to use her photograph as a source for my painting. Thank you, Corrie!

This painting is 14" x 11" and is painted on 140 lb. cold-pressed Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper.

Corrie - thanks for your comments about your photograph - I am so sorry I didn't include it in the initial post - I have edited it to give you the credit you deserve. It is a beautiful photo which caught my eye immediately. Thanks again.

I love how you've shown the translucency of those petals as light comes through them, Barb. Just beautiful!

Barb, in addition to the light showing through those marvelous petals, I especially like the fuzziness of the stems and pods. Did you lift the fuzzies out after painting the background? I am really curious about this, whatever you did was so effective!

Beautiful colors full of sunshine. Such lucky students!

Thank you Sherry...I haven't had a lot of experience painting back lighted objects.

Susan, for most of the stems, I lifted the background paint with a small brush and then added some hairs with a very small brush. In the lower right hand corner, because I wanted to have the hairs very white, I actually carefully painted the background colors around the hairs - took forever.
