A Look Into The Past

This painting is an experiment in textures and is one where I used a limited palette. My colors were Ultramarine Blue, Deep, Quinacridone Orange and Indigo. It is a poured watercolor with salt textures. I was trying the wet in wet textural techniques of the painter Gwendolyn Bragg, but didn't do it correctly so I ended up just doing the usual pouring on wet watercolor paper. You may see a demo of her techniques on her website. I still want to learn to do her technique, so I plan to try some more using her specific technique. The textures in this painting came from the salt I dropped on it before the watercolor dried. I lifted my lights before it dried also. Then, while it was drying, I did the detailing in the bricks and stucco.

Beautiful! Love the texture and the composition. I would drop just a dab of the blue in the orange side and a dab of the orange in the blue side to give it more unity and sign it and call it done :) Love it!

These are some of my FAVORITE palette colors! I like Rhonda's idea of showing a little of each of the colors on the other side. Rhonda has GOOD ideas, doesn't she? And she doesn't charge! Hahahaha. I am going to look up the website you mentioned to hear more about this mysterious new technique.

Rhonda...I will try that - never thought of doing that! Thanks.

Ginny...Isn't that video amazing? Unfortunately, it didn't work for me because I didn't get those little round areas of texture that she does - I think that perhaps I didn't let the paper relax and I also wet the back as well as the front before I started - I had it too wet, I think!I plan to try again and work this thing out.

Thanks to you and Rhonda for commenting!

Barb...you are just the best at taking a simple subject and making it live and breathe! I will have to go to her website and see what she does, but your technique needs no apology! It is just a great painting.
