Rocks and Ripples

This was painted for the Watercolor Workshop February project - "all paint from one photo." The theme for this month is painting texture and the source photo for this painting certainly has a lot of texture. I decided to do this in a traditional manner - drawing in the ripples and painting around the ripples, one submerged rock at a time - from the top down. The final painting leaves a lot to be desired, but over-all I am happy with the results since I have never tried to paint water ripples before.

The painting is 7" x 5" and is painted on 140 lb. Fabriano Artistico cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Without seeing your title, I thought you did a marvelous job on the ripples, Barb! It is lovely!

Barb...Thanks for sharing your process with this one. I have, so far, only been considering how I might approach it and I think you just nailed it!

Very nice, Barb. You have amazing details for such a small painting.

Hi Barb love this water scene. Was wondering how your husband is getting along. Time has flown for me since October and I am very settled and enjoying family, friends, life and painting again.

Susan, I am happy you like my process - I really wasn't sure that I was using the correct approach - am glad that you think it works! It wasn't easy in my opinion.

Christiane - I think that sometimes it is easier to work small in watercolor - I am more challenged by a large painting. Thank you!

Thanks, Joan...My husband is doing better - the c-scan done in December was clear and we see the oncologist again in April. He hasn't recovered his voice, though, and I am wondering if he ever will. Thanks for your concern.
