Colors of Autumn

This is a painting I finished yesterday. It is the example for a painting I am teaching at my intermediate watercolor class at the Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio. We started the drawing and underpainting tonight during class. It is titled "Colors of Autumn."

Been following your blog since first finding you and was quite envious of your mountain hideaway with friends amongst nature's bounty. Love the raincoats!
As for autumn leaves, it was always one of my Sept/Oct subjects for classes/workshops bringing in armsful of leaves from different trees for students to create their own build up of overlapping colours and shapes. Love your interesting result Barbara.

I love this layering of leaves. Wonderful color and such a great composition too!

Joan...I also have always loved this subject for classes and workshops and have also brought in leaves. Art students are always very receptive to this subject, aren't they?
Our mountain hideaway stay with friends was awesome - very spiritual and inspiring. I want to do it again and again.......

Gretchen...I love to layer leaves in this manner - it is also a wonderful way to teach negative painting techniques in a "positive" way:)
Thanks so much for commenting!

Barb, you have to be the queen of negative painting! It always amazes me how easy you make this look when I know (because I have tried!)how difficult it is to wrap ones brain around negative painting of positive shapes!

Thanks, Kathy! I am glad you like it!

Susan - negative painting, although something of a challenge, is something I enjoy doing...I think because I am such a control freak and this goes right along with that. I do sometimes get confused, though:) Thnks for your comments...I always enjoy hearing from you.

You've got the negative painting down pat - beautiful colors and volume, a favorite subject this time of year, too.

Barb, when I opened your blog, I thought what a great photo and then I read that this is your painting! Beautifully done and you know where to put the emphasis and where to fade into the background. Your class is very lucky to have you as an instructor.

Also, I love my art vacations and I'm delighted to read about others. We always remember the moments when they were most challenging and laugh about them later.

Mary...Thanks for visiting and your kind comments. I had a wonderful art vacation - it was my first, but I hope not my last! I can certainly understand why artists do this...it is so fulfilling!

Sharon...Thank you so much for your positive remarks - you always make a person feel so good! I know you have had a hard time recently with the passing of your father. Please know that many prayers and thoughts are with you, dear friend.
