YUPO Tuesday with an Old Friend

Donna Clark
I spent last Tuesday afternoon, dinner and evening with my friend Donna Clark who is the YUPO painter with the "mostest!"  She started out by demonstrating some of her techniques to creat texture and then went on to composition.  It was all so very interesting.  Then we went to dinner and when we came back I attempted my own painting - one that had interesting texture in the flowers, but was way too tight for a YUPO painting - I have a LOT to learn yet!  Below is my hydrangea painting - which is not a great painting, but I was very happy with the texture on the flowers themselves.  The texture was created with one of her rubber stamps.  Now if I can only find one of those for myself!  :)
Thanks, Donna!

Barb,
What a fun day that must have been! Your painting shows great control for a yupo. I had not thought of using stamps with yupo in order to get textures. What a great idea.
I look forward to seeing more of your paintings on yupos.
Thanks for sharing.

I love the painting! The texture is great-someday I'd like to try Yupo.

Well, I sure like this painting, Barbara. I think it is fabulous and the colors simply divine. I really have got to try Yupo!

What shape was the stamp you used? I am verrrrry curious to know! I will start haunting stores that sell stamps now! I have a huge, wide roll of Yupo beckoning to me and want to get started again.

This is very good, though tighter than we usually achieve with Yupo. But, if there is anyone who can achieve tightness on Yupo, it is you. Don't be afraid to use your style and make it work with Yupo, like I have said before...not everyone has to paint loosely!

Christiane...Thanks for your comments - the stamps work really well on YUPO - also texture from rubber shelf lining and plastic carpet protectors - you can try just about anything - experiment.

JGR...Thanks - You should try it sometime although I have some difficulty seeing how you could incorporate it into your inimitable, beautiful style!

AutumnLeaves...like i told JGR - you should try it. One of the great things about YUPO is that the colors remain more intense because the pigment doesn't absorb into the paper.

Susan...I tried so hard to loosen up and I had to laugh when I read your comment - Thank You - I will still try to get looser, but if I can't I will hold your comment close to my heart! :)

Yupo is hard to get "tight" with so I think you did a terrific job! Donna gave a demo to our Greater Cincinnati Watercolor Society last August, so give her a "hello" from me!!

This must have been a great day. I've seen Donna give a demo and talk at our watercolor society in Cincinnati :) Your Yupo painting is tight and shows control - but nothing wrong with that! I like it and would like to see a few more darks in the blossoms but wouldn't change anything else.

Rhonda...yes - it was a great afternoon...I learned a lot from Donna. She has a real touch with YUPO. I plan to keep on working with it. I also thought that the blooms needed some darker areas to balance the leaves, but have been afraid to start messing with the blooms because I was happy with the texture and don't want to ruin it. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet!
