On the Cusp

I started this painting 11 years ago...This painting is of my granddaughter, Jennifer, at my nieces wedding. She was 12 years old - not yet an adult and not a child...that in-between time that is so difficult...thus the title "On The Cusp!" She was sitting on the edge of the stage watching the guests dancing - probably bored out of her mind. Today she is beginning her last year in a Physician's Assistant program and is 23 years old...also quite the beautiful young woman now!...no longer watching at weddings.

I never finished the painting - until this week - as I mentioned in a previous blog, I am trying to finish old paintings. This work is 15" x 12" and is painted on 140 lb. Arches cold-pressed watercolor paper.

Wow, that's a touching story and a beautiful painting! I love the way she is gazing off into the darkness and what's beyond. So prophetic too, that you didn't finish the piece until now... I love this!

I think this is beautiful, Barb! She looks so pretty with her gorgeous hair and the added detail of those ankle bracelets is just perfect. I never looked this good on the cusp.

Katherine...Thank you for suggesting the prophetic aspects of this painting - I loved the photo from the moment I took it - finished the drawing and then set it aside. I do not know why...perhaps my subconscious WAS at work as you suggest. Now that she is a confident, beautiful young woman I could finish the painting. Thanks for your insight.

Sherry - I most certainly didn't look this good or pay this much attention to my appearance at that age. She still has that beautiful strawberry blond hair - I always told her that it was her crowning glory.
