Autumn Study in the Style of Z.L. Feng

One of the best things a painting student can do is study other artists and even copy or duplicate their styles of painting - not to sell or for profit, but to LEARN!  When I received the August copy of Watercolor Artist magazine, I immediately loved the work of the artist, Z.L. Feng.  In this painting, I changed her composition, but basically tried to paint in her style, which is riveting!  I was not fantastically sucessful, but did learn a lot.  Now I am going to use a photo I took in Wisconsin in October, and try my own original painting in the style of Z.L. Feng.

Absolutely lovely work, Barbara! I've been worrying about you, by the way. What happened to your winning ribbon post?

Wow, I love these colors and the reflections and the general all over glow of the entire painting!!! Can't wait to see "your" own!!!

It is strange to see how soft this is with those vivid colors, but the handling of this in her style looks soft to me. Those jewel tones are just amazing.

Thanks, Sherry! I'm confused - my winning ribbon post is still on this blog - to what were you referring?

Thanks, Donna...this style is exciting and a very fun painting process! I can't wait to try it either.

Susan - I think that is what is so compelling about this tecnique - the "jewel" like colors and yes, it does have a softness about it. I think that is because the first layer is basically wet-into-wet wathes.
