Pamela's Truck - WIP #1

I worked on the drawing for the watercolor of this wonderful vintage truck painting yesterday and today. My friend Pamela Baker is a wonderful photographer and she has graciously allowed me to use her photographs as source pictures. What a treat!!! The size of the painting will be 22" x 15" and is on Canson Tientes 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.

I am drawing the truck by using grids- both on the photograph and on the watercolor paper. The drawing is done with a 2B pencil. This is going to be a really exciting painting for me! The truck is awesome, as you can see in the photograph above the drawing.

Wow! I can't wait to see how this turns out! You know, I've never used the grid strategy. Perhaps it's a good way to have all those details and keep the composition?

I so love these vintage truck and car pieces. This will be fabulous! That is a photo of the actual truck you are using? It almost looks like a photo of a painting! Beautiful in and of itself!

Cori - I feel that the grid is a good way to enlarge photographs because, basically, the artist is doing the drawing and not tracing. I feel that this makes it more original and your work. It does also help in keeping correct proportion. I use 16 squares(rectanges) but it can be broken down to 32 which makes it easier to capture details in proportion.

The photograph is fabulous. Pamela Baker is truly a photographic artist. I still have some drawing to finish on this one and hope to start painting soon.

AutumnLeaves - you know that I am addicted to doing paintings of vintage trucks and cars (and old falling down barns, also.) Yes - this is an actual photograph - the photographer, Pamela Baker, has an artist's eye for composition and color. She is wonderful. We plan to do a show together with her photos and my painting interpretations side by side in the future.
