Sunflowers for Class

This is a painting I did for the class I am teaching on Monday nights.  It is an exercise in using gauze for the textures in the center and also for spontaneous application of paint leaving unpainted areas for sunlight.  It is 9" x 13"  on 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper.    I was not happy about the photo of the painting - the blues are not this intense in the real painting.

Beautiful textures, Barb! I love how you pushed back the leaves...Your students are very lucky!

Yes, your students are lucky! I love the whole painting-especially the texture.

This is lovely! I like the intensity of the colors, but am having a hard time picturing them less so. I know how things transform from the real to the computer screen though.

Christiane, jgr and Autumn Leaves: Since this is a lesson in texture, I am happy that you like the texture in this one. The colors are intense in the original painting - I think the thing that isn't right is that only the blue shows in the background in the photo and there are other more subtle colors the screen doesn't catch.
Thanks to you all for commenting!

My eye was drawn straight away to the flower centres - that gauze technique has worked very well! Excellent work, Barb. x

Gillian...I am glad you like the gauze effect - it is the first time I have tried that and find that I like the way it works. I am going to ponder about how it can be used in other ways.
