After teaching art in the public schools for 40 + years I now have time to create art for myself. I am a watercolorist who sometimes likes to work in mixed media as well. My journey in art began when I was a small child and continues to this day.

<span style="font-size: large;">My husband, Rock, gave me this pot of tulips for Easter. They were so lovely and I just had to paint them. I painted this on 1/4 sheet of 140 lb. Wibble in my design is what makes up the left angle and design on an angle. This is about 3" x 5" and is done on white drawing paper. I used a Micron-Pigma black pen - .005.</span>Barb Sailorhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01632810668704142394noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6477523791028247348.post-693077356955358972017-07-06T17:12:00.000-04:002017-07-06T17:12:00.732-04:00Mary's Crocus's<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;">My good friend, Rose, recently brought me a small photo of grapes with wine which she found in the "life" section of the newspaper. She, and I both thought it would make a great subject for a painting for my class. This painting is approximately 9"x 12" and is painted on Fluid 100 140 lb. cold-pressed watercolor paper. This is basically a limited palette painting in 99% greens and yellow with a little red added to the green to get the dark green of the leaf and the shadows in the grapes. I don't know who the photographer is, so I can't give credits. I made some changes when I drew it and added some things that weren't originally in the photo.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #38761d; font-size: large;">We like to drink wine while we paint in class, so this painting is very appropriate for us!!!</span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;">This painting is a watercolor on a tissue paper collage over an old, discarded painting, with a touch of Zentangle thrown in.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #990000; font-size: large;">I textured the tissue paper with Gesso before I collaged it to the old painting. This was a class project for my watercolor class and I encouraged them to find their own floral inspiration and they all did a wonderful job. Some even changed the subject to sea turtles, angels and fish.</span></div>

"Whirligiggs!"</div>
<br /><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;">I used an old watercolor painting as my base and then collaged green tissue paper over the entire surface allowing some of the original painting to show through. Then I collaged pieces of white tissue paper on which I had painted and stamped gesso patterns. </span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"><br /></span></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #cc0000; font-size: large;"> Then I took a stiff bristle brush and softened the edges and drybrushed white gesso over the entire painting allowing the green tissue to peak through.. At this point, I drew the koi fish and then painted the composition with watercolors which worked really well over the gesso. I was happy with the results because I love the textures which are showing through all the different layers. This painting is approximately 12" x 16".</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; color: #38761d; font-size: medium;">The watercolor is painted on Dick Blick student grade 140 lb. watercolor paper. It worked pretty well, although the paper doesn't have enough sizing for my needs. The paint doesn't lift when you want it to so you have to be pretty certain about your strokes from the start. All in all, the paper worked well considering the economical factor - it is not expensive and is great for beginners. It would frustrate experienced painters.</span></div>

I was particularly taken with the cardinal, so this evening I painted a small (4"x 6") watercolor of the cardinal. It is painted on 140 lb. hot-pressed Fabriano Artistico watercolor paper. It was a fun activity for a Saturday evening. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-size: large;">This is a painting I did from a photograph taken by one of my adult painters at Riverside Art Center, Misty Steinke.. It is a barn in northwest Ohio. I was taken by the beautiful clouds in her photo and felt I just had to paint it.</span></div>

<span style="font-size: large;">This is the painting I prepared for last weeks lesson...it isn't as bright and cheerful as the others I have painted about Peggy's Cove. This one is on a dreary, misty, foggy day. I imagine they have those days as well, in Nova Scotia.</span></div>
