Dahlia WIP

This are my examples of the painting which is the last lesson for the intermediate watercolor class I am teaching at the Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio. Both are poured watercolors. The example on the right is one where I used mask on the edges before the pouring. The painting on the left is the same drawing poured without the masking on the edges. My students did their pouring on Monday night and they all used mask. Next week, they will remove the mask and detail the painting by painting in shadows, etc, as I have started to do in both paintings. I plan to post the finished paintings and will also post my student's paintings when they are finished.

Traditional Approach to Painting the Clematis

My Monday night intermediate watercolor class at the Riverside Arts Center in Wapakoneta, Ohio is painting the clematis that I used for the demo painting for our Thursday painters. It is interesting to compare the two paintings and the two painting styles. My personal preference is for the poured version - I would love to hear your opinions!

Fushia Clematis

Our group of Thursday painters have been having some structured classes taught by one of us for several weeks. Last week and the previous Thursday Michelle Walker worked with us on palette knife painting in oils. We painted a single apple both weeks. A picture of the first week's apples is currently on this blog. This Thursday, I took them through the process of pouring a painting and negative painting techniques. This painting is approximately 9" x 12" and is painted on 140 lb. Canson Tientes cold-pressed watercolor paper. We had a good time and the results were very good. They will be posted at a later date. This painting is from a photo by a Watercolor Workshop friend, Vicki Greene, who very graciously allows us to use her photos. Thanks, Vicki! :)
The group of Thursday painters now has a name - we call ourselves "Muses Mix Media" and we will have a blog as soon as I get the time to set it up.

Three Apples

We spent a couple afternoons doing knife paintings of an apple. My painting buddy Michelle (who is the oil painter), took this picture of our 3 paintings after our first session. The tight one on the left is mine - old habits are hard to break - I am tight even with a painting knife! We had so much fun. This week we are going to be pouring.

King of the Roost

This is a small oil painting that I painted today - it is 7" x 5" ...painted on canvas panel. I really like roosters - they are so colorful. I am not accustomed to painting this small in oil - something I am trying to get used to. I am also trying to loosen up - believe it or not -this is loose for me...:)
